Small Comforts

I usually prefer to spill my guts in my Xanga cool Moleskin journal, but man, this weekend really had its way with me — I broke up with my boyfriend of over a year, had a complete job-hunting meltdown, and spent my Saturday night with a vacuum, a bottle of... Windex (okay, even I'm surprised that I didn't type "wine"), and a Swiffer in hand. I like to take emotional messes very literally, so cleaning is my obvious coping mechanism of choice. This is about the time where I dive into a book and don't surface for a few days (I'm an English lit major, after all); there's only so much that hot tea and fresh flowers can do, although this video cheered me up immensely.

I've just begun rereading Vonnegut's The Sirens of Titan: A Novel, but other than that, I don't have a ton of books with me on campus that aren't academic. I do, though, have a gift card to Amazon, and I'm more than ready to wield it. I like essays (like those in When You Are Engulfed in Flames)(or really, anything by David Sedaris) and pretending that I'm French (...I own Entre Nous: A Woman's Guide to Finding Her Inner French Girl — and may have read it to shreds). Do you have any recommendations? What are your favorites?

oh my dear! I'm sending countless virtual hugs your way...I'll be thinking of some book selections for you, but until then...stay strong! if there are two times in my life I'd never go back to, it'd be 8th grade and my last semester of college...I loved my last semester of college, but I hated it too...so much stress. hang in there, my love. if you need anything, you've got me! xoxo {av}

Whenever I'm hard-pressed for optimism I ALWAYS read a little from "An American Childhood" by Annie Dillard. Maybe you've already read it, but even just the language is incredibly inspiring and elegant, let alone the content. It's not a quick read (well, maybe it is but I tend to linger and savor her sentences) but it's totally worth it and can be read a chapter at a time and revisited when necessary.
Feel better :-)

I took a science fiction class in high school, where we read The Sirens of Titan, but the only other book I liked from that class was Ender's Game. It's a classic and such a good book. Also, Jane Eyre is fantastic, as is Steve Martin's new book An Object of Beauty.
Hope you feel better!

A good book and a glass of wine can cure almost anything that ails you (emotional ailments anyway). I love historical fiction, Phillipa Gregory is fantastic and Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series is one of my favorites. And The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is definitely worthwhile. Also, if you haven't read Eat Pray Love. now may be the perfect time. Chin up darling girl xo
